A touring exhibition of automata from Cabaret Mechanical Theatre

This inspiring collection of original automata from Cabaret Mechanical Theatre has over 30 different exhibits.

Press the buttons and bring the pieces to life, begin to understand the ingenious mechanisms which make the automata work, then start to work on your own designs.

You can join one of the workshops, design your own moving toy, and even have a go at making automata out of food! Art, Science and Technology collide in this highly acclaimed travelling exhibition.
Exhibition contains:
  • 30 motorised exhibits by Paul Spooner, Keith Newstead, Ron Fuller, Peter Markey.
  • Supporting interpretation panels explaining basic mechanisms of the pieces, ie Levers, Cams, Cranks, Pulleys, Ratchets and Linkages.
  • A classroom set of 10 Designing Automata kits. Staff training is provided to run playshops for visitors using this inventive kit which requires no tools or glue.
  • Interactive CD-Rom is provided to use on the exhibition floor.
  • DVD’s showing How to Make Automata with Keith Newstead, Made in Stithians, (A day at work with Paul Spooner), and Cabaret Mechanical Video, a history and background to CMT are supplied for viewing on the floor if facilities are available.
  • A wide range of merchandise is also available for your store, including kits, cutouts, books, DVD’s CD-Roms.


Additional exhibits are also available if required, including larger exhibits, and hand-cranked pieces.

The exhibition requires approximately 150-200 square meters.
Minimum hire period 3 months.
