Night 1 – Miniature Barecats Play the Piano

November 11, 2010 by

Welcome to the first night of The Mechanical Magic of Cabaret. Following the success of last year’s Magic of Cabaret, we are once again bringing you 40 festive evenings of delightful curiosities and mechanical moments.

Firstly a special edition for Cabaret Mechanical Theatre from miniature automata maestros Angela and Laurence St Leger.

The large barecat is showing his talents at the piano (an occupation which has been more usual for automata goats than cats over the years), whilst the small cat sits on top of the piano and waves his arm in time to the tunes.

Dimensions:
H 3cm (1.25″)
W 2cm (0.75″)
D 1.5cm (0.5″)

Angela and Laurence started making dolls house accessories over 25 years ago, and naturally started to equip the doll’s houses with automata. It was John Lumbus who discovered their tiny Elvis automata whilst CMT was in Covent Garden in the early 1990′s. At that time The Dolls House shop was a neighbour in the Covent Garden Market. Since then we have sold many of the hundreds of designs that the St Legers painstakingly create, (with the aid of bright lights and strong glasses). They have recently been commissioned to make pieces for movie giants, including a version of King Kong for Ray Harryhausen and a miniature Blues Brothers for John Landis. How wonderful to see the St. Legers again! (We’re friends from the London Dollshouse Festival, where we were all dealers). I’m convinced these amazingly talented people can make any miniature automata one could imagine!
